Trial of Rascism

The recent chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird have been about the trial for Tom Robinson. As you may know Tom Robinson is being (falsely) accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Atticus is representing him and does a very good job of making it clear that it was not Tom Robinson. Instead it was Bob Ewell who beat Mayella, after she tried to kiss Tom Robinson. Multiple clues to this were released such as when Atticus asks Mayella if she loves her father. "Love him, whatcha mean?'
"I mean, is he good to you, is he easy to get along with?"
" He's does tolerable, 'cept when-"
As she ends on this line and nervously corrects herself it becomes clear to me that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Which makes it even more infuriating when Tom Robinson is found guilty. Simply because they would rather trust a White Man's words, not matter how ignorant, wrong, discriminatory it is.

Yet it is no different than things that happen today in society especially with police brutality.
Trayvon Martin Shooting Fast Facts - CNN.com When will this change? I for one am tired of the events I see in the book and in today's society.

  1. I agree that the trial is very similar to a lot of modern events like police brutality, but there are also real-life cases of wrongly convicted "criminals". Especially based on race. One such example is the Ronald Cotton and Jennifer Thompson-Cannino case. Just like in TKAM, she was raped by a black man, and she accused the wrong man for it. He was stuck in prison for eleven years until DNA testing proved his innocence. The two are now friends and have written a memoir of their experiences together, called "Picking Cotton."

  2. I love your quote and how it relates to today's society. You did a very good job in going into detail to support the quote and what was happening in TKAM. I also liked the link/picture, and how relevant it was to your quote.

  3. Like Andrew said a lot of people get accuse for only their color, no matter if their innocence or guilt. Through history their has been lots of case accusing humans of something they aren't guilt about. " when someone accuses you of doing something your not doing, its usually because they're the ones doing it." this quote reminds me of the Tom Robinson case because turns out Mayelle dad Bob beat up Mayelle and might have rape her, he accuse Tom of raping Mayelle.
